News From The Field

Matt McIntyre is a go-getter. That’s simply the only way to put it.

A true example of using the ICD program to its full potential, McIntyre hasn’t stopped hitting the knowledge button.

Beth Harrigan is a teacher these days, but don’t call her that.
“I’m not a teacher, I’m a Steelworker,” the ICD instructor and former USW Local 1066 member said. “I’m still learning. I took over 20 years of ICD classes and turned it into a dream job.”

It was sweet home Alabama for ICD in mid-November.

ICD visited three of its sites in Alabama prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. USW/Goodyear-Gadsden, USW/U.S. Steel-Fairfield, and USW/BF Goodrich-Tuscaloosa were all part of the tour.

Welcome aboard.

A couple of new faces to ICD made the trek to Northwest Indiana in late September for our New Member Training as well as one other to Cleveland in late October.

ICD welcomes Kevin Mahoney, Robert Havens, and Donna Permigiani to the team.

Cleveland Rocks.

Especially when the Institute for Career Development is in town.

Twelve Local Career Development Programs recently attended a New Member Training held October 23-24 at USW Local 979 Dave McCall Hall in Cleveland.

You want to go where everyone knows your name.

Minus the Cheers song, but sticking to theme, a lot of old friends and familiar faces came together to celebrate the Open House at the Institute for Career Development headquarters in Merrillville, Indiana on September 25.

Kathy Patterson calls herself the poster child for ICD.

“I was on salary at (USW) Goodyear for 11 years in the batch lab and my job got outsourced,” Patterson recalled. “I didn’t finish (college) – I loved my job – but I didn’t have any education to find another position.”

Kewan McCully can’t help but smile. It’s hard not to these days.

The USW Local 1014 member and furnace assistant in the QBOP has a lot to be happy about: his family, his job, and most recently, his college degree.

Let's cut to the chase -- or in this case -- the money!

One of the many highlights of the 2018 ICD National Conference -- and always one of the highlights of our year -- was the drawing at random of the 7 winners of the Tino Fulimeni Memorial Scholarship.

On Wednesday, July 25th 2018, the USW/ArcelorMittal-Riverdale plant celebrated quite the milestone – its 100th year anniversary!

USW Local 307 President Jody Juarez wasn’t the only one in the crowd in Topeka, Kan., who knew Ron Hoover was touched by the honor.

“When (Ron) got up and spoke, he said of all the awards and honors he’s received, this one meant more than anything,” Juarez recalled.

If you build it, they will come.

And they sure did at the USW/U.S. Steel-Midwest Career Development Educational Fair and Open House on Thursday, June 21.

A special ribbon cutting ceremony for the new classroom was the highlight of the event.

As we come to the end of the 2nd Annual ICD Learning Opportunities Week, we wanted to share some of the great photos we received/took throughout the week.

As part of its Learning Week, which coincides with ICD's Learning Opportunities Week, ArcelorMittal is taking the initiative to promote the Career Development benefit to all Steelworkers employed by the company.

One way it is accomplishing this is through the YouTube video below:

When Jim Ribley’s wife passed away in 2003, life suddenly, as you can imagine, became a struggle. He knew he needed a spark to help get things turned around.

So fate intervened.

As the inaugural Learning Opportunities Week wraps up, we want to thank everyone involved for all their support.

As we've said before, one of the truly gratifying aspects of introducing Learning Opportunities Week is seeing all the different and impressive ways programs have gone about achieving their objective of showcasing all of the exceptional opportunities available to Steelworkers through the Career D

Learning Opportunities Week was created when ICD Advisory Board member Mark Langbehn came to us and asked if there was a way to incorporate the national ICD program into ArcelorMittal's annual Learning Week, which is also this week.
